APA Group has successfully completed the installation of all solar panels at the Port Hedland Solar Farm and Battery project, which is set to enhance BHP’s port operations upon its completion.
This initiative encompasses the establishment of a 45MWAC solar photovoltaic (PV) generation facility alongside a 35MW/36.7MWh battery energy storage system, aimed at providing renewable energy to major mining enterprises in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The new installations will complement the existing Port Hedland Power Station, which is managed by APA.
Government Funding and Benefits
The Western Australian Government has also pledged funding support of $1.5 million for the battery energy storage system (BESS) through its Clean Energy Future Fund. This BESS will replace the traditional spinning reserve that the gas-fired power station offered, using energy stored in the battery to provide immediate support to the electrical grid when necessary.
Project Timeline and Completion
Construction for these facilities kicked off in 2023, with expectations set for work to be finalised by late 2024.
