Major Investment to Enhance Energy Efficiency in Queensland Social Housing

A significant joint investment of $116 million from both the Federal and Queensland governments is set to bring about energy performance enhancements for tenants living in social housing across Queensland. This initiative aims to lower energy bills and alleviate the financial burden of living costs.

The programme is expected to introduce a variety of improvements, such as upgrades to thermal envelopes, air conditioning options, ceiling fans, as well as installations of solar photovoltaic systems, energy-efficient hot water systems, and improvements to fixed appliances.

Benefits for Residents

According to the Queensland Government, this funding will enable residents in social housing to anticipate reduced energy expenses while maintaining warmer homes during the winter months and cooler climates in the sweltering Queensland summer.

The funding is projected to facilitate upgrades for around 28,000 public housing units and an additional 4,000 community housing dwellings, supporting Queensland’s transition to cleaner energy sources while helping to manage the cost of living.

Support for Vulnerable Households

Queensland Premier Steven Miles expressed that it is essential for every Queenslander to have access to a safe, comfortable, and affordable home. He stated, “This initiative will further reduce electricity costs for vulnerable households by enhancing their energy efficiency amidst rising living costs.”

Mr Miles highlighted that Queenslanders are already benefiting from a $1,000 rebate on their electricity bills, and this collaborative funding initiative will enable more than 32,000 households in social and community housing to achieve further savings.

Federal Government’s Commitment

Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen remarked that collaborating with the Queensland Government on improving energy efficiency in social housing leads to warmer winters and cooler summers for residents, along with lower utility costs throughout the year.

Federal Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy Josh Wilson pointed out that social housing tenants often struggle with energy costs, and they are the least equipped to afford energy efficiency upgrades. “The Federal Government is dedicated to ensuring that all Australians can benefit from advancements that enhance the energy performance of their homes,” he added.

Leadership in Clean Energy

Queensland Minister for Energy and Clean Economy Jobs Mick De Brenni commented, “The Queensland Government is spearheading the clean energy movement by providing financial support to help the most at-risk Queenslanders lower their energy usage, benefiting both the wallet and the environment.”

Furthermore, Queensland Minister for Housing Meaghan Scanlon stated, “We’re committed to what truly matters for Queensland by increasing housing availability and aiding residents in reducing their energy bills.”
