Engraved Electrical Panel Traffolyte Labels

Engraved Electrical Panel Traffolyte Labels

Traffolyte (also seen as Traffolite) is a multi-layered phenolic composite sheet widely used for durable engraved identification and warning labels. Its electrical non‑conductivity and heat resistance make it ideal for use inside and outside electrical cabinets and enclosures, including switchboards and control panels.

Brief history

First manufactured in the late 1920s, Traffolyte quickly became the go‑to material for engraved transformer and panel labels because of its low cost and clear contrasting engraving. Over time the term “Traffolyte” has become genericised and is commonly used to describe multi‑layer engraved phenolic label materials.

How Traffolyte engraving works

  • Layered construction: Sheets are produced in multiple contrasting layers (for example white over black). Engraving removes the top layer so the lower contrasting layer forms clear text and symbols.
  • Engraving tools: Historically engraved using pantographs; today CNC routing machines with floating heads are common. The floating head allows the cutting tool to follow uneven surfaces while a nose cone sets the engraving depth so the top layer is fully cut through.
  • Laser engraving: Some modern multi‑ply materials can be engraved with CO2 lasers, producing clean results without the bevel that a rotary cutter produces.

Health & safety note

Traditional phenolic materials produce fine phenolic dust when routed or engraved, which is now recognised as a health hazard. Appropriate dust extraction and personal protective measures must be used during machining. Newer materials and laser processes can reduce or eliminate this risk.

Material performance & formats

  • Durability: Engraved labels are scratch resistant, UV stable and withstand harsh weather conditions.
  • Thickness & colours: Available in many colour combinations and thicknesses — from very thin 2‑colour sheets (~0.2mm) up to 3mm in 3‑ply configurations.
  • Flexibility: Early sheets were stiff and brittle; modern materials are more flexible and can be rolled or formed where required.

Common applications

Traffolyte labels are used for a wide range of identification and safety applications, including:

  • Caution and warning labels
  • Compliance plates and control panel plates
  • Electrical identification and switchboard labels
  • Indicator light and push‑button labels
  • Operator instruction plates and key tags
  • Mining equipment labels and industrial signage

Mounting & attachment

  • Traditional method: panels often have mounting holes (M3/M4 or small countersunk holes) for screws, rivets or bolts.
  • Switchboard practice: multiple 1/8″ mounting holes and plastic plugs, rivets or screws are commonly used where heat or vibration may cause adhesives to fail.
  • Adhesives: double‑sided tape can be used for flat, low‑heat applications but may fail long‑term inside heated enclosures.

Custom shapes & artwork

Labels can be cut to any standard or custom shape. For irregular shapes we can work from vector files (for example .dxf). Hand‑drawn designs can be scanned and vectorised prior to production.

Choosing the right process

Decide between routed engraving and laser engraving based on the desired finish and production constraints:

  • Routed/CNC engraving: Produces a bevelled cut and strong contrast; suitable for thicker multi‑ply sheets.
  • Laser engraving: Produces a smooth flat finish and can be preferable where bevelled edges are not wanted or where dust extraction is a concern.
