The State Electricity Commission (SEC) has introduced a consumer pilot across three local government areas, designed to assist Victorians in transitioning their homes to electric power and reducing their energy costs.
According to the Victorian Government, this pilot is a significant stride towards creating a comprehensive service for consumers interested in making the switch to an all-electric home.
Free Digital Platform for Energy Savings
This initiative features a complimentary digital platform that guides users through a brief survey regarding their home and energy consumption, subsequently crafting a customised plan aimed at lowering energy expenses through electrification. Part of the SEC pilot also offers recommendations for compatible appliances, estimated costs, potential returns on investment, available government rebates, and opportunities for emissions reductions.
Connect with Approved Installers
For customers seeking additional information or looking to upgrade their appliances, the SEC facilitates connections with local installers who have undergone an approval process. These installers can visit homes free of charge to provide a detailed estimate, and households are only obligated to pay for services if they choose to proceed when it suits them.
Accessible Improvements for All Households
The SEC is committed to educating consumers about the enhancements available for households across all financial brackets. This encompasses small, budget-friendly measures that can be implemented right away, along with larger investments that can occur when existing appliances reach the end of their lifespan.
Pilot Areas and Online Support
The pilot programme is currently active in the cities of Casey and Merri-bek, and is set to extend to Ballarat in September 2024. To further support Victorians at every stage of their transition, the SEC is hosting online public information sessions that provide expert insights and virtual home tours, helping energy consumers comprehend the advantages of improving their home energy systems.
Significant Savings with Electric Transition
Research indicates that an average household in Victoria with both gas and electric appliances can slash their annual energy bills by approximately 32 per cent, saving around $1,400 by moving to an all-electric setup. Those who adopt solar in addition to this transition may see their savings soar to about 62 per cent, equating to over $2,700 each year.
Lily D’Ambrosio, the Victorian Minister for the State Electricity Commission, remarked, “We’re empowering Victorians by providing them with the necessary tools to significantly reduce their energy expenses and participate in our leading-edge energy transition.”
Chris Miller, Chief Executive Officer of the SEC, noted that the platform for electric homes serves as a crucial resource for helping Victorians decrease their energy costs during these challenging times.
Belinda Wilson, Member for Narre Warren, expressed, “Electricity is the direction we must take – it represents the future. We are dedicated to assisting individuals in shifting from gas to electric and achieving savings.”
