The Clean Energy Council says that Federal Labor’s commitment to installing 400 community batteries across the country paves the way for electricity to be cleaner, cheaper, reliable and more neighbourly.
Labor has announced it would spend $200 million over four years to install 400 community batteries across Australia, benefiting up to 100,000 households.
“This is a policy that takes advantage of Australia’s love of rooftop solar,” said Clean Energy Council Chief Executive, Kane Thornton.
“When every suburb has a community battery, our electricity system will be fairer, cleaner, cheaper, more reliable and more neighbourly.”
More than 2.5 million households now enjoy the benefits of rooftop solar across Australia, with a record 378,451 systems installed in 2020.
A neighbourhood battery allows customers to store excess solar electricity generated during the day and withdraw it at night or share it with their neighbours. Networks can use community batteries to manage the grid and reduce grid costs. Electricity bills for all customers are reduced, even those who don’t own solar. It even works for people who can’t install solar and batteries, like renters in apartments.
