The inaugural phase of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency’s (ARENA) Solar Sunshot programme is now underway, with the aim of fostering innovation within the solar sector.
First unveiled by the Federal Government in March 2024, the programme guidelines were crafted after comprehensive consultations with various stakeholders.
Future Energy Supply
Darren Miller, the CEO of ARENA, emphasised that solar electricity will be pivotal to Australia’s energy landscape, forming a cornerstone for the nation’s aspirations towards net zero emissions and becoming a renewable energy superpower.
“It’s essential we advance our legacy of innovation and expand this into manufacturing throughout the solar supply chain. The demand for solar to achieve our net zero and renewable energy objectives is substantial, presenting Australia a chance to reinforce its resilience and unlock enduring economic prospects,” stated Mr Miller.
Emphasising Innovation in Manufacturing
ARENA is renowned for its role as Australia’s renewable energy innovation agency, and it is eager to identify and promote innovation specifically within solar manufacturing. Australia has established itself as a frontrunner in solar research and deployments, providing a unique opportunity to expand its footprint in manufacturing capabilities.
The initial phase includes the launch of two funding rounds, totalling $550 million in financial resources.
Round 1A is dedicated to advancing solar PV manufacturing innovations concerning modules, the materials used in modules, and deployment systems, allocating $500 million to this endeavour.
Round 1B has been set up to assist studies focused on solar PV manufacturing, covering feasibility and engineering evaluations from a $50 million fund.
Maximising Renewable Potential
ARENA noted that Australia possesses a rich renewable energy potential, combined with high-quality and plentiful raw materials, as well as a proven history of excellence in research and development. The Solar Sunshot programme aspires to leverage these strengths to consolidate and diversify supply chains while creating economic benefits.
The guidelines for this initiative were established in partnership with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water (DCCEEW), alongside industry players and other significant stakeholders.
Application Process and Future Developments
Applications for funding are currently open, with ARENA planning to conduct an information webinar for interested applicants to provide further details.
